Minority Caucus protests NIB’s attempted arrest of Assin South MP

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly condemned an attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), describing the move as a breach of parliamentary protocols and constitutional provisions.

The Minority in Parliament this morning, Wednesday 9, April 2025 successfully foiled the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

The Minority Caucus describes the actions of the NIB as unlawful and politically motivated.

In a memorandum submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Annor-Dompreh, criticized the NIB for disregarding directives previously issued by the Speaker regarding investigative engagements with Members of Parliament.

According to the Caucus, the NIB officers attempted to apprehend Hon. Fordjour at his residence on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, following a press conference he held on behalf of the Minority. The event was reportedly linked to his public allegations of illicit operations involving Airmed at the Kotoka International Airport.

The Minority argues that this attempted arrest violates Articles 117 and 118 of the 1992 Constitution, which provide protections for MPs in the execution of their duties. The group emphasized that the Speaker had, as recently as April 2, 2025, reiterated his directive to all security agencies to adhere to laid-down procedures when seeking to engage parliamentarians.

“This troubling pattern of non-compliance threatens the separation of powers and violates the privileges and immunities of Parliament,” the memorandum stated.

The Minority is urging the Speaker to reaffirm his earlier directives and initiate immediate dialogue with the leadership of national security and intelligence agencies to ensure that constitutional protocols are respected.

“The sanctity and dignity of Parliament must be preserved,” the memorandum concluded.
