Masawudu doubts Police claim of Azorka’s arrest

Osman Masawudu says the alleged arrest of Sofo Azorka does not add up.

The Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Osman Masawudu, has cast doubt on the Ghana Police Service’s claim that Sofo Azorka has been arrested following the Akwatia by-election violence. Masawudu insists that the reports of arrest are inconsistent and appear politically motivated.

According to Masawudu, police investigators had initially assured him that the Second National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sofo Azorka, would be picked up in connection with the assault case at the Akwatia by-election. However, he said the feedback he later received from the Police raised serious doubts about whether the supposed arrest of Azorka actually took place.

The Ghana Police Service had earlier confirmed that Alhaji Sofo Azorka was taken into custody in Tamale on September 10, 2025. Police explained that he was granted bail after giving a caution statement and directed to report to the Eastern South Regional Command in Kyebi on September 16 for formal arraignment. The Police statement stressed that the suspect had been cautioned and released on bail.

But Masawudu, in an interview on Friday, September 12, challenged this account, saying the sequence of events suggested otherwise. “They told me and assured me that on Friday, they will arrest Azorka. By Monday, I called the investigator, and he said they had summoned him but had yet to get him. Later, another investigator said Azorka had been taken into custody. For me, the information is conflicting,” he explained.

The NPP Vice Chairman described the alleged arrest of Azorka as a political ploy designed by the governing party to give an appearance of fairness. He accused the NDC of playing tricks and using state institutions to deceive the public.

“For me, everybody knows how tricky these NDC people are. They are confident tricksters. They can trick people just because they fall foul,” Masawudu argued. He further alleged that the government under John Mahama was using selective justice.
