The majority Leader, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the Speaker of Parliament Hon RT Hon Kinsford Sumani Alban Bagbin to reconvene the House for parliamentary business to resume.

Parliamentary business has been halted due to the controversy surrounding the declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant by the Speaker.

The majority calls comes at the backdrop of a Tuesday Supreme Court ruling against the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant on 17 October.

The majority believed that reconvening the House for their legislative duties will enable partliment to attend to some critical government business before recess.

The Supreme Court by a 5-2 decision ruled that the Speaker, Alban Bagbin’s declaration of the four seats as vacant is unconstitutional.

A ruling in favour of Mr. Afenyo-Markin who took the issue to the Supreme Court for interpretation.

The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo stated the the Speakers declaration cannot hold.

“By court in in a majority decision of five two, Lovelace Johnson JSC and Ahmadu Tanko JSC dissenting on the issue of jurisdiction, the plaintiff’s action succeeds the full reasons and orders of the court shall be filed with the registrar by close of date, tomorrow, 13th, November 2024 the is the judgment of the court” the Chief Justice said.
