At least 25 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries on Friday evening when a bus transporting mourners from a funeral overturned and plunged into a ditch near Kisumu city in southwestern Kenya.
According to regional traffic officer Peter Maina, the vehicle was travelling from Kakamega to Kisumu when the driver lost control while approaching a roundabout at high speed. Among the deceased was a 10-year-old girl.
Kenya’s medical services official, Fredrick Ouma Oluga, stated that 29 individuals were initially reported injured. Four of them later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment in hospital, raising the death toll to 25.
The incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations in Kenya, where traffic accidents remain frequent, often attributed to poor road conditions, speeding, and limited compliance with safety standards.
This tragedy follows another fatal crash near Naivasha just one day earlier, in which nine people were killed, highlighting the ongoing road safety challenges facing the country.
