Karaga residents appeal for suspension of VRA mass disconnection exercise

Concerned residents of the Karaga Municipal Area have appealed to local authorities and the president to intervene in the ongoing electricity disconnection exercise being carried out by the Volta River Authority (VRA) in the municipality.

In a letter addressed to the Municipal Chief Executive and other relevant authorities, Mr Iddrisu Mohammed Zabaga, a member of the Karaga Concern Youth Group, urged that the disconnections be temporarily suspended or postponed until after the harvest season.

According to the appeal, many residents, mostly farmers, have invested their limited resources into cultivating their farms at this time of year and are facing severe financial constraints. As a result, households and small businesses are struggling to settle their electricity bills on time.

“We acknowledge the importance of paying for power consumed,” the letter stated, “but we plead that the exercise be rescheduled to a later time, preferably after the harvest season. This will allow residents to mobilise the necessary funds without compromising their livelihoods.”

The residents expressed hope that with the intervention of the municipal leadership, a “balanced and humane resolution” could be reached that considers both the operational needs of VRA and the economic realities of the community.
