The government has announced plans to procure 500 new buses over the short to medium term to strengthen the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and enhance public transport services nationwide.
The Minister for Transport, Hon Joseph Bukari Nikpe, made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, 30 October 2025, while outlining the government’s broader plan to revitalise public transportation and support Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.
According to the Minister, the first batch of 150 buses is expected to arrive in early 2026, marking the start of the rollout.
Hon Nikpe explained that Metro Mass Transit currently has only 134 operational buses nationwide, a situation that has made it difficult for the company to sustain operations, expand routes, and meet the growing demand for affordable and reliable transport.
Responding to questions from Members of Parliament, the Minister said the new procurement forms part of efforts to modernise terminal facilities, improve service quality, and create more employment opportunities in the transport sector.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses, about 500 of them, over a short to long term to augment our operations,” Hon Nikpe stated.
“These buses will be deployed across the country to optimise existing routes, bridge the transport gap and open new ones in underserved areas.”
The Minister further revealed that Metro Mass Transit is taking steps to implement aspects of the 24-hour economy, beginning with its vehicle maintenance department and traffic unit, to ensure buses remain available and functional at all times.
The initiative, he added, reaffirms the government’s commitment to providing safe, efficient, and accessible public transport for all Ghanaians.
