EC blames NDC regional organiser for Ablekuma North Collation Centre disturbance

The Electoral Commission (EC) has accused the Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of instigating an attack on its offices during the re-collation of polling station results for the Ablekuma North Constituency.

The said incident, which took place on Friday, 17th January 2025, resulted in serious property damage and left staff members traumatized.

Following a High Court directive issued on January 4, 2025, mandating the EC to resume collating results and declaring winners for the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary elections.

The EC scheduled the continuation of the collation exercise for the morning of 17th January 2025. However, based on intelligence reports, the Ghana Police Service recommended postponing the activity to ensure adequate security measures were in place.

Despite this caution, security reinforcement was reportedly absent at the collation centre, leaving the EC vulnerable to the subsequent invasion.

In a statement, the EC alleged that the invaders, led by the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Organiser, vandalised property at its Old Head Office. Damages included broken furniture and louvre blades.

 

The Commission also reported the alarming presence of two unidentified individuals dressed in military attire during the chaos.

It criticised the lack of security support from the police and expressed disappointment over the disruption, which has further delayed the collation and declaration of results for Ablekuma North.
