A 30-year-old woman, Mavis Nkrumah, has been arrested by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend with a substance suspected to be acid.

According to a statement from the Ghana police service, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 28, 2025, at Ablekuma Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra. According to preliminary police investigations, Mavis visited the residence of her former partner, Gideon Frimpong, unannounced at around 1:00 a.m. Gideon, a 29-year-old taxi driver, agreed to drive her home after a brief conversation.

While on the journey, the pair reportedly stopped at a stretch of road near Ofankor known as “7 Days” after Gideon requested Mavis to alight due to the rough nature of the road ahead. It was at this point that Mavis allegedly questioned him about their relationship status. When Gideon confirmed for the third time that their relationship had ended, Mavis is said to have poured the corrosive substance on him.

Bystanders quickly responded and identified the victim, who was then rushed to a nearby hospital. He received treatment for burns and injuries and has since been discharged.

Mavis Nkrumah fled the scene and reportedly attempted to escape into a neighbouring country. However, police tracked and apprehended her on June 3, 2025. She is currently in custody and assisting the police with ongoing investigations.

In a statement, the Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against using violence to resolve personal disputes.
“Acts of violence are criminal and will be dealt with by the law. We urge the public to use lawful and peaceful means to address their concerns,” said Supt. Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
