A league match in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) turned violent on Saturday after Barau FC forward, Nana Abraham, was attacked by irate fans during a game against Katsina United at the Katsina Township Stadium.
Reports say the incident occurred after Nana Abraham scored a late equaliser for Barau FC to level the score at 1–1. The goal came as a blow to Katsina United, who are chasing a top-four finish, while Barau FC currently sit 19th on the league table.
Moments after the goal, a section of home fans invaded the pitch and assaulted the Ghanaian forward. Security officials on duty swiftly intervened and rescued the player, who sustained severe injuries in the attack.
He is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, where medical officials describe his condition as critical but stable.
Many football fans across Africa strongly condemned the act, calling it a “disgraceful display of hooliganism” that has no place in football. They called on the NPLA board to conduct investigations into the matter to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage across the football community, with calls for tighter security measures and stricter penalties to curb violence in stadiums across the country.
