The President of Ghana, H.E Nana Akufo Addo, has pardoned Mr Phillip Assibit Akpeena and 11 other convicts.
The CEO of Discovery Group of Companies on 23 February 2018 was convicted in the GYEEDA scandal alongside former National Coordinator of GYEEDA Hon Abuga Pele for causing final loss to the State. Mr Phillips was given 12 years jailed term whiles Mr. Pele was given 6 years to serve, but on 1st July 2021 the former Chinia-Paga MP Hon Abuga Pele was pardoned by President Akufo-Addo.
The President, after a thorough review of the cases of these individuals, with their health conditions being put into consideration, their length of imprisonment and other factors of mitigation, has exercised his prerogative of mercy to pardon these 11 prisoners by article 72(1) of the 1992 constitution.
The President, in consultation with the Council of States, considered the circumstances of these cases and exercised his prerogative mercy on them.
Notable among the list is the former CEO of the defunct capital bank Mr William Ato Essien who was sentenced to 15 years in jail;
