News Desk Report :

The Abudu Youth of Dagbon have expressed deep concern over what they describe as rising tensions and alleged acts of brutality against residents of Nanton in the Northern Region.

In a press release issued on Sunday, September 7, 2025, the group accused state security forces of abusing citizens after the relocation of Naa Bawa, the chief of the Nanton traditional area, from Nanton Zuo to the Nanton Wulankuro House last Friday.

According to the statement, some residents were arrested and beaten by security personnel on Saturday, with one woman reportedly sustaining injuries and being rushed to the Nanton government hospital. The group alleged that those picked up were accused of wearing talismans and of disliking Naa Bawa.

“When did talismans become a crime in Ghana, and when did it become compulsory to like Naa Bawa?” the youth asked, describing the actions as undemocratic.

The Abudu Youth further claimed that police and military personnel allowed one Chekko Naa and his associates to transport weapons from Tamale, allegedly in preparation for an attack on Nanton citizens under the guise of a Quranic recitation planned for today.

They warned that the situation could escalate if immediate steps are not taken to restore calm, urging the Northern Regional Minister to intervene.

“These developments are unhealthy and gradually jeopardising the peace of Nanton and Dagbon at large,” the statement said. “Our patience must not be mistaken for weakness.”

The group emphasised that they remain law-abiding but cautioned that they would not tolerate continuous intimidation and “dehumanisation” of their people.

The President of the Abudu Youth of Dagbon, Iddrisu Amin signed the release.
