The NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, is on a hunger strike following his arrest and detention, his counsel, Enoch Afoakwa, has revealed.

The lawyer said the move is Abronye’s way of resisting what he describes as political persecution.

Mr Afoakwa explained that the arrest of Abronye DC and his decision to embark on a hunger strike were connected to his fears over safety and fairness in custody. “Abronye is a man full of life. He knows this is mere political persecution, and certainly he is hopeful that his liberty will be restored,” the lawyer said.

According to him, the NPP chairman has refused food and water since his arrest, insisting it is both a symbolic protest and a means of protecting himself. “Once you are being handled this way, will you trust that the same people handling you in a manner as if you have committed a treasonable offence—when they give you water, will you take it? When they give you food, will you take it? Certainly, he needs to protect his life, and under the circumstances, that is the reason he is on hunger strike,” Afoakwa told reporters.

Abronye is facing one count of publication of false news and another of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace. He was first remanded on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, when he made his initial court appearance on the charges.

He has pleaded not guilty but is to reappear before court on Friday, September 19, 2025. He is alleged to have stated on television that the current Inspector General of Police, Tetteh Yohuno, attended meetings of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Akwatia. He also allegedly described the IGP as “the most corrupt” in the country’s history.
